snow! books! why?

Hey did you know its going to snow tomorrow?  Over here, near Concord MA, we are expected to get 2 feet of snow in less than 24 hours (per noon forecast on Friday).  The news stations are calling it a “HISTORIC SNOWSTORM”.  But until there’s a storm that mirrors the Blizzard of ’78 on the books, I’m not believing that it’s a “HISTORIC” storm. How are you preparing? or Why are you not? Leave a note below about how you prepare for storms.

[Hang in with me till the last paragraphs to see the point of this post.]

Me, I’m planning for a weekend of being inside by spending the morning hunting down up ALL my portable charging banks, making sure they’re fully charged, so I can recharge (my phone too), most importantly my kindle! I can survive being stuck in the house for a week as long as I have enough books to read. So – I’ve been downloading all the genealogy/history/YA books I can get my loaded in order to be ready for the inevitable power outage.

Here’s what is on my reading list (I hope I have enough for 2 days)

I know – you’re wondering – Why is she writing about books? What do these have to do with genealogy!?? Well one is a how-to book, so I wont mansplain that one, but all the others are period books that help us gain perspective of the ‘when’ of our trees, and some of the mythology behind the ‘whys’ of how our ancestors may have lived.

Knowing the social history of the times in which our ancestors lived is important to understanding the why of their decisions. Why did they move? Why did they keep the carved horn? Why do they not talk about when they were young? Having a framework in place in which to put the facts of ancestors lives helps us really breathe life into the facts to make a complete life story for our relatives.

So I ask you: How are you preparing? or Why are you not? Leave a note below about how you prepare for storms. And think about what your descendants would want to know about your traditions/routines around storm prepping.
